Assassin’s Creed - Rick Boer’s cosplay
I’m not against the the portrayal of a character someone loves - like Altair or Conner. He did it to look as much like those specific character, and he pulled it off beautifully. I feel horrible at the thought of people bashing at him - implying that he is doing something racists - and in some instances calling him racist because of his cosplay. I am aware of how wearing makeup to look like a different ethnicity was used in the past. But What The Hell - Boer wasn’t using it under any of those circumstances with the exception that he wants to portray a character. It’s an art to dress up as video game/anime/tv show/movie characters, and for the extent he went to look as much like the video game characters, I want to assume he’s a fan of the game. So …he’s not allowed to try his best at trying to look like a character he probably loves? He’s never allowed to do it or else he’s racist?
What I’m skin-crawling on the most is how some people are forcing him out as a racist - like when as a child you’re told to admit to doing something bad that you didn’t do. The notion of telling someone that they are something they are not. “You did that, so you are/must be ___.” While there are people who do things and are correctly judged on what they are, this is not true for everybody.
It’s just as bad to use hateful words as “disgusting” towards anyone. Especially someone who did not intend to cause anybody any harm. THEY DON’T DESERVE THAT TREATMENT! Nobody does! What makes those who are bashing him different from Boer is that Boer never had any bad intention towards anyone in his heart - but those who are bashing him are deliberately portraying horrible negativity towards him. This happens a lot…Too often.
A quote from Boer himself:
”Did you know we have a national festivity that involves hundreds of people making there skin black to be “zwarte Piet” here in the Netherlands? Not to be a racist…. to enjoy children… basically… that’s what I do.”
This was his response to being called racist:

Something I have learned - especially here on Tumblr, is that there is no final truth to anything. If you wish to believe what he did was wrong, so be it. If you want to keep that perspective, so be it. I wont belittle anyone if they are hurt by something.
Its just so messed up that now someone can’t do something the way they want to do it to achieve the best result without being told rude comments on how bad they are being for what they did… Art.
